Part 2: Define your concept
2.1 References and Concept

Before starting this task, I searched online for many references, including fashion posters, items mentioned in quotes, and various kid 'dudles. In the end, I found that the fusion of graffiti and real person photos is very interesting and impactful. I also searched for fonts of the kids' doodle type as a reference for making posters.

Concept

Title: SHADES ON, WORRIES GONE

Summary of your design concept:

This is a very short quote, and it is very concrete.

According to the description of the quote, sunglasses became an essential element in the picture. I took a photo of myself wearing sunglasses in the sun as the theme of the whole picture, and posed with exaggerated cheerful expressions and postures to show a positive and happy attitude towards life, free from worries and free from worries.

I thought about the elements that match my quote and the picture to add to the design of the whole poster. In the end, I decided to boldly combine graffiti and real photos. Such a combination will amplify the atmosphere of freedom and no worries, and graffiti generally represents the simplicity and beauty of children.

I decided to use graffiti style design in the font of the poster to maintain the consistency of the elements in the design, making the picture rich but regular.

Sketches

Progress

  • I took photos that met the criteria during my vacation trip. I chose two photos from the same location and plan to merge them together in the later progress.

  • Use layer tools to overlay portrait images onto landscape images. The reason why I didn't directly use a complete photo is because I wanted the characters and scenery to be on different planes to highlight them. But landscape images also need to be taken in the same area as character images to avoid appearing conflicting.
  • Afterwards, I used graphic tools to create a rectangle as the frame for the portrait, and used gradient tools to make the "frame" more textured.
  • I used a paintbrush tool to mimic the feeling of a duddle, extending the edge of the hat beyond the frame to achieve some montage effects.

  • In Adobe Illustrator, I added suitable fonts and applied 3D effects. Diagonal fonts can make the image more impactful.
  • I imported the entire poster into Photoshop and added some details to the font using the brush tool, which can make the overall atmosphere more cohesive.
  • I also used colors with distinct hues and saturation for other doodles. It should be noted that the layer positions of the doodles are not the same, so as to better interact and blend with the entire image and font.

After completing the overall poster design, I adjusted the feeling of the final photo by adding filter layers, especially the text below. I created a gradient layer below the layer where the text is located to darken the edges of the image and better highlight the text at once. After continuous experimentation and adjustment, I have achieved my final outcome.

FEEDBACK

Week 9:
Specific Feedback:
The image does not match the selected quote,  I need to redo the work from the beginning.

REFLECTION

Experiences:

This poster design requires a combination of knowledge learned in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, which is a very interesting yet challenging process. I need to take photos that match the selected quote and use them for various poster production in post production. Although I have learned a lot of knowledge in the course, I feel a bit at a loss because of the high degree of freedom in this task.

Observation:

My final product is not completely consistent with my reference and imagination. I found that I still need to learn many tools and constantly accumulate experience in order to make my final outcome fit my imagination. I also found that subtle differences can affect the final output, such as the green finger part in my work, which I changed a lot of times before feeling satisfied.

Findings:

Through this task and the research and reference of good design and posters during the task process, I have found that many designs are not necessarily complex, but always full of imagination, and the text, images, and themes expressed must be in line. A good poster requires the combination of various elements to form.
