Compositing Digital Collage

LECTURES/INSTRUCTIONS
  • Through studying this week's lecture, I have learned how to use Photoshop tools (lasso tool, pen tool, layering, selection, toolbox, selection tool). These tools seem very basic, but to truly master and apply them flexibly in one's own design, a lot of practice is needed.

PROJECT 1B: DIGITAL COLLAGE

1. Download all of the images here to your computer:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cGcbENrjSksAaMQK9np2jb6ZaM7Y-81l?usp=sharing
 2. Follow this tutorial demo as reference to create your digital collage:
https://youtu.be/BlW7F-fTsbE
3. Create 3 different composition digital collages from the images that you’ve downloaded.
4. Create A4 canvas size  (vertical) on Photoshop and start to do the compositions.
5. Take 3 photo of your digital collage compositions  and insert it on the section below
6. Submit (Turn In) this file on Google Classroom

DIGITAL COLLAGE
  • We need to complete this task within the third or fourth week.
  • Before starting the collage, I first conceptualized the central idea and theme of the entire design based on the available elements, which allowed my design to make a theme more logical.
  • After coming up with three different themes, I began to break down and assemble the images that could be used.

1. COMPOSITION 1

  • In this collage, I want to express the existing relationship between humans and machines (inorganic substances) and animals and plants (organic substances) in the current world.
  • I think because I and other readers are human, I have isolated them as bystanders.

2. COMPOSITION 2

  • The theme of this collage is similar to the previous one, and I want to depict the flourishing development of technology.
  • The high-speed railway in the painting breaks through the dense branches and leaves, breaking the boundary between high-rise buildings and the sky, symbolizing the power and rapid development of technology.

3. COMPOSITION 3

  • In this collage, I didn't think too deeply about the theme. Just wanted to express a bizarre story: huge fish surrounded the subway. And people unconsciously enter the monster's mouth mechanically.

FINAL OUTCOME

Mr. Fauzi selected the first collage of all my paintings as the one that can be further edited.

Final Outcome

REFLECTIONS
Experience - In this task, I tried to find the elements I needed from the given pictures to complete my collage. This is somewhat difficult because it is not so free, and our range of choices is limited. I try to create collages using aesthetically pleasing composition techniques such as the golden ratio.

Observations - The functions of Photoshop are very powerful, and its selection tool algorithms are very limited. For example, "magic bar" can help me directly select the desired graphics, which is more convenient and fast than using knives and scissors when making physical collages. And after selection, we can edit the shape, such as distorting or zooming in and out.

Findings - We need to consider the relationships between the elements used and whether there is enough connection between them and the theme we want to express, rather than randomly stacking many pictures together. Only when all the patterns and adjustment tools we use are used to present the same theme, will everything appear logical and form a sense of beauty and unique meaning.
