Our task 3 is to create an illustrated layout poster, and we need to use the knowledge learned in the courses of Illustration and Digital Photography to complete this task.
Mr. Hafiz demonstrated in class how to use Interwife tools and crop mask design fonts in Adobe Illustrator.

Week 8 (Independent Week):
This is a continuation of last week's lesson, where Hafiz continued to teach us how to use the pen tool in Illustrator.

TASK 3: POSTER DESIGN

 References and Concept

Before starting this task, I searched online for many references, including fashion posters, items mentioned in quotes, and various kid 'dudles. In the end, I found that the fusion of graffiti and real person photos is very interesting and impactful. I also searched for fonts of the kids' doodle type as a reference for making posters.

Concept

Title: SHADES ON, WORRIES GONE.

Quotes and Design Ideas:

This is a very short quote, and it is very concrete.

According to the description of the quote, sunglasses became an essential element in the picture. I took a photo of myself wearing sunglasses in the sun as the theme of the whole picture, and posed with exaggerated cheerful expressions and postures to show a positive and happy attitude towards life, free from worries and free from worries.

I thought about the elements that match my quote and the picture to add to the design of the whole poster. In the end, I decided to boldly combine graffiti and real photos. Such a combination will amplify the atmosphere of freedom and no worries, and graffiti generally represents the simplicity and beauty of children.

I decided to use graffiti style design in the font of the poster to maintain the consistency of the elements in the design, making the picture rich but regular.

 Sketches

Rough sketches done on paper. I choose two types of sans serif fonts provided (Google fonts), which are Nerko One Regular and Rubik Bubbles Regular for the basics of my typographic.

 Progress

  • I took photos that met the criteria during my vacation trip. I chose two photos from the same location and plan to merge them together in the later progress.

  • Use layer tools to overlay portrait images onto landscape images. The reason why I didn't directly use a complete photo is because I wanted the characters and scenery to be on different planes to highlight them. But landscape images also need to be taken in the same area as character images to avoid appearing conflicting.
  • Afterwards, I used graphic tools to create a rectangle as the frame for the portrait, and used gradient tools to make the "frame" more textured.
  • I used a paintbrush tool to mimic the feeling of a duddle, extending the edge of the hat beyond the frame to achieve some montage effects.

  • In Adobe Illustrator, I added suitable fonts and applied 3D effects. Diagonal fonts can make the image more impactful.
  • I imported the entire poster into Photoshop and added some details to the font using the brush tool, which can make the overall atmosphere more cohesive.
  • I also used colors with distinct hues and saturation for other doodles. It should be noted that the layer positions of the doodles are not the same, so as to better interact and blend with the entire image and font.

After completing the overall poster design, I adjusted the feeling of the final photo by adding filter layers, especially the text below. I created a gradient layer below the layer where the text is located to darken the edges of the image and better highlight the text at once. After continuous experimentation and adjustment, I have achieved my final outcome.

Final Outcome

Title: SHADES ON, WORRIES GONE.

Description:

With the theme of waterside vacation, the photos show a positive attitude towards life through funny and happy expressions, colorful graffiti style fonts and decorations. Get rid of worries, put on sunglasses, and face the sun!

REFLECTIONS

The degree of freedom in this task is very high, but it is also very difficult because we did not have clear guidance in the design process. Therefore, we need to choose what tools and techniques we need to use and learn on our own.

In all of my design courses, my instructors always tell us that good design doesn't necessarily have to be complicated, but rather best fits the theme and intended message of the design. I deeply appreciate this advice in this task.

Additionally, I realize that my work always needs to be improved through feedback from others. When I completed my first poster design, I was very satisfied, but when I asked my friends for their opinions and thoughts, I found that I still had many shortcomings.

For future designs, I hope to become more proficient in using each tool, and through continuous accumulation of experience, I can more accurately predict the results that can be obtained after using each tool. This will reduce a lot of wasted time and increase efficiency.
At the same time, I hope to improve my time planning. I believe that I need to constantly practice to more accurately control the time required to complete each work.
